The unprecedented shortage of health care workers has become a crisis throughout Upstate New York.  The shortage is projected to increase over the next several years.  It is imperative that we begin making young people aware of the many career choices in the health care field. 

One strategy to assist in alleviating the problem is to raise awareness through health occupations education.  Exploring the Health Professions© is a comprehensive curriculum and toolkit package designed to:

  • Incorporate the expertise of health occupations educators/teachers, health care professionals and curriculum developers
  • Target high school junior and senior students
  • Meet New York State Learning Standards in applicable areas
  • Be FLEXIBLE to meet diverse needs of teachers and students
  • Involve students with hands-on activities
  • Introduce students to a variety of health career opportunities
  • Provide teachers with a guide and materials for successful use

The Exploring the Health Professions© curriculum demonstrates four career clusters:

  • Clinical Laboratory Sciences (pathologist, medical technologist, phlebotomist, etc.)
  • Direct Patient Care (physician, nurse, medical assistant, etc.)
  • Physical Rehabilitation, Therapy & Fitness (chiropractor, physical therapist, etc.)
  • In the Operating Room (surgeon, anesthesia technician, nurse anesthetist, etc.)

The Exploring the Health Professions© package includes:
