On May 1, 2008, Catskill Hudson Area Health Education Center (Catskill Hudson AHEC) held its fourth Nursing Summit at the New York State Nurses Association headquarters in Latham, New York. This year’s focus was “Topics in Developing Staff Excellence.”  Evaluations affirmed that Nursing Summit 2008 exceeded the expectations of its sixty-six attendees, who included nursing and staff development educators as well as those involved in healthcare education and training of staff.  Topics included: “Developing Staff Excellence: The Role of Education in Achieving Magnet” by Kathy Webster, MSN, RN, CNA; “The Role of Staff Development in Recruitment and Retention” by Sue Malinowski, MS; E-Learning and Other Innovative Teaching Strategies for Staff Educators” by Vicki Howard, RN, CMSRN; “Fostering Excellence Through Governance: Preceptor Retreat Program” by Deanna Spendiff, SDN, RN & Kathleen Lee, MA, RN;  and “Graduate Nurse Intern Program Design: Mentoring Professional Transition” by Dianne White, BS, RN.  Some comments from this year’s Summit include: “Thank you so much for the wonderful day. I have some great ideas to incorporate into my practice!,” “Loved the program.,” “As always, wonderful day.,” “Excellent learning day! Very nice handouts.,” “The sharing of experiences and tools that others have in place, priceless.” and “Thank you to all the presenters for sharing their expertise and ideas, passion and enthusiasm. You’ve given me a lot of ideas and I hope to discuss, plan and implement some of them.”

Previous Nursing Summit topics have included: “Bringing Together Leaders in Hospital Nursing and Nursing Education Programs to Meet Each Other and Begin a Dialogue,” “Bringing Together Leaders in Nursing Practice & Nursing Education to Discuss the Development of Programs to Educate, Recruit & Retain Nurses,”The Artistry of Nurse Management” and “Online Curriculum Development.

Catskill Hudson AHEC is a non-profit organization that addresses healthcare workforce shortages as well as promotes healthcare career education and awareness throughout an eleven county region, which includes Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Otsego, Putnam, Rockland, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster.  Catskill Hudson AHEC is one of nine AHECs in New York State.
